Qingfengyan Cliff Inscriptions

The Qingfengyan Cliff Inscriptions are a Fujian Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Qingfengyan Cliff Inscriptions in Xiuyu are located in Xiuyu Village, Dongzhuang Town. Carved during the Ming Dynasty when a garden pavilion was built here, there are a total of 12 inscriptions. One of them is a poem engraved in five lines with four characters per line in regular script: “A lone rock on Pan Tuo, hidden by the sea’s edge; Sitting cross-legged, I gaze at the bright moon—how many people are there in this empty mountain?” The signature in smaller characters reads “Shi Xiang,” who also inscribed the three large horizontal characters “Feiyun Cave” in regular script. The inscription below is “Lin Kunzhang wrote” and the two large characters “Shixia” (Gobbling the Rosy Clouds), each 0.63 meters in diameter. The “Tianfeng Haitao” (Heavenly Wind and Sea Waves) inscription is credited to “Song Zhao Ruyu’s calligraphy.” Among the unsigned cliff carvings are “Try the Sword,” “Fishing Jetty,” “Transcendent Terrace,” “Reading Terrace,” “Jade Toad,” and “Pillow on Flowing Stone.” On the southern cliffs facing the sea of Aocheng Mountain, there is a large area of sunken-line paintings on the rock face. One depicts “Lü Dongbin Drunk,” which is 2.3 meters high and 1.4 meters wide. Lü Dongbin is shown in an intoxicated state, with a guard figure on his right. The lines are no longer distinct, and the signature has been eroded and is unrecognizable. These inscriptions provide physical material for the study of cliff carvings. The Qingfengyan Cliff Inscriptions were designated as a Fujian Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 2009.

Xiuyu Village: Located on the southeastern coast of Putian City, Xiuyu Village has a total population of over 1,400, with several hundred currently engaged in business outside the village.

During the Four Cleanups Campaign and the Cultural Revolution, it was known as the frontline of coastal defense. In 1997, responding to government calls, large-scale reclamation projects began. Villagers were mobilized to consolidate the frontline into a contiguous expanse of fertile farmland covering one thousand acres, which now supports thousands of residents in several nearby villages.
