Meizhou Mazu Temple is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Meizhou Ancestral Temple is the colloquial and honorific name for Meizhou Mazu Temple, and is considered a sacred site in the hearts of Mazu devotees worldwide. Located on Meizhou Island in the central-western part of the Taiwan Strait, it belongs to Putian City, Fujian Province. Situated more than 40 kilometers southeast of downtown Putian, Meizhou Ancestral Temple was built in the early Song Dynasty. Initially, it was just a modest structure called “Shennü Shrine” (Goddess Shrine), and after multiple constructions and expansions, it grew to its current scale. Over the centuries, as the Mazu belief spread through the enshrinement of spirit tablets and followers traveled abroad, Mazu gradually extended her presence from Meizhou to the world, becoming an international deity that transcends national boundaries.
