Historic Site of the "Dongwu Incident"

The historic site of the "Dongwu Incident" is located in Dongwu Village and Jicheng Village, Dongpu Town, Beian Economic Development Zone, Meizhou Bay, Putian City.

On May 17, 1945, when Huang Guozhang, Lin Runan, and Ye Liangyun led the armed work team of the provincial and special committee headquarters and were surrounded by the First Regiment of the Nationalist Provincial Security Forces in Xihu Village on Nanyu Island, Kang Guoqiang, leader of the Fujian Sea Guerrilla Unit, upon hearing the news, dispatched troops to support and repelled the stubborn enemy. This incident was discovered by the puppet army leaders and became direct evidence for them and the Nationalist Military Statistics Bureau agents to confirm that there were “communist elements” active within the maritime puppet forces. As a result, their control and precautions over various puppet army units were strengthened. On May 18, after the Japanese army withdrew from the central Fujian coast, the puppet “Fujian Hejun Salvation Army” accepted the Nationalist Military Statistics Bureau’s directive to “switch allegiance and defect.” On May 29, the entire First Route Army of the puppet forces moved from Meizhou Island to Dongwu Village in Zhongmen, breaking the precedent of puppet troops not having been stationed on land for a long time. On June 2, the First Regiment of the Nationalist Security Forces separately occupied several villages around Dongwu, forming a siege around the village. During their stay in Dongwu, the puppet army command deliberately assembled and deployed defenses every night under the pretext of guarding against attacks by the security forces, reinforcing sentry posts to create the false impression that they were not colluding with the stubborn army. In the early hours of June 7, the command of the First Route Army of the puppet forces suddenly used a meeting as a pretext to lure Kang Guoqiang into custody and immediately escorted him to the seaside where he was executed. Soon after, the puppet military police squadron immediately surrounded the hiding place of personnel at the Dongwu Five Emperors Temple, announcing that they would search for Communist cadres. At the same time, the Nationalist Security Forces quickly surrounded Dongwu Village, conducting house-to-house and boat-by-boat searches, resulting in the arrest and sacrifice of concealed individuals such as Zhang Boting, a member of the Fujian Special Committee, and Qiu Ziguo, a member of the Putian County Committee, who were on fishing boats on the beach. After the incident, Communist cadres within the unit who had not yet been exposed escaped under disguise that very night. On June 9, the First Route Army of the puppet forces withdrew back to Meizhou Island. In mid-June, following orders from the Nationalist authorities, they were dispatched to Xiapu to be reorganized into the Independent Regiment of the Nationalist Fujian Advance Corps. Soon after, they were summoned to Zhejiang for retraining. Along the way, concealed personnel gradually found opportunities to escape; most were captured and sacrificed, while others returned to their hometowns to continue revolutionary activities. The "Dongwu Incident" resulted in the tragic loss of the main leaders of the maritime guerrilla forces, who were arrested and killed, and the disintegration of the unit.

The historic site of the "Dongwu Incident" was originally part of Tiwu Village. After an administrative division adjustment in 1999, it was divided into Dongwu Village, Titing Village, and Jicheng Village. Jicheng Village borders Dongwu Village to the east, Titing Village to the west, Dukou Village to the north, and Meizhou Bay to the south. The Five Emperors Temple is located in Nancheng Natural Village of Jicheng Village. Originally called the Golden Rooster Temple, it was first built during the Ming Dynasty. Built along the mountain terrain, it faces south with its back to the north and overlooks the vast Meizhou Bay. The temple consists of a front hall and a rear hall. The front hall serves as the Marshal’s Mansion, enshrining the Marshal Honghong; the rear hall primarily worships the deities of the Five Emperors. Behind the temple lies a massive rock resembling a golden rooster, commonly known as the “Golden Rooster Stone.” There is also a stage behind the temple where villagers hold temple fair activities during festivals, creating a lively atmosphere.
