Xiapu County Town

Ten of the fourteen townships in Xiapu County are coastal, giving the area a particularly prominent maritime advantage. The county has a coastline stretching 404 kilometers, one-eighth of the province’s total, with tidal flats covering 1.04 million mu. There are numerous bays and scattered islands—196 islands of various sizes and 138 harbors. Xiapu’s Sansha Port is just 126 nautical miles from Keelung Port in Taiwan, allowing fishing boats to depart in the morning and arrive by evening. Moreover, Sansha and Taiwan share linguistic similarities and comparable customs.

Xiapu boasts many scenic attractions. These include Ge Hong Mountain south of the county town, the “Xiufountain” where Song Dynasty scholar Zhu Xi once lectured, the landing site of Japanese monk Kukai, who came to China seeking Buddhist teachings during the 12th year of the Tang Dynasty’s Zhenguan era—Chian; Jian Shan Temple known as the “Ancient Temple on Flower Peak”; the “Coastal Fortress” of Dajing Ancient Castle; the “Little Putuo of Eastern Fujian” San Sha Liuyun Cave; the “Eastern Fujian’s version of Beidaihe” Waihu Beach—a natural seaside bathing spot; the picturesque “Sea Country Peach Garden” Yangjiaxi and Yin Feng Pavilion; and the Tiger Town Pagoda.

The Tiger Town Pagoda stands atop Longshou Mountain. It was built in the 32nd year of the Qing Dynasty’s Kangxi reign (1693 AD) by Huang Dalai, the Commander-in-Chief of Funing Prefecture. It was reconstructed during the Qianlong era as a seven-story stone pagoda, exuding a majestic presence.
