Beihai Watermelons
Beihai is located in southern Guangxi and features a subtropical marine monsoon climate, with abundant light, temperature, and water resources as well as long average sunshine duration. The watermelons grown here hit the market earlier than those from most other parts of China, except Hainan Province. Most watermelons in Beihai are cultivated using “three-shelter” integrated technology and organic fertilizers, resulting in fruits with thin, crisp rinds and juicy, tender, sweet, and refreshing flesh that boasts outstanding quality and is easy to transport over long distances. This attracts numerous merchants to purchase them, leading to high demand that often exceeds supply. Watermelons can be planted three times a year—in spring, summer, and autumn. Spring watermelons are available from late April to early May, summer watermelons from early June to early July, and autumn watermelons from early October. The annual planting area is about 48,000 mu, mainly distributed across Tieshangang District, Yinhai District, and Hepu County, with a total output of 96,400 tons. The main varieties planted include Zhunong Dameiren, Nongyouxin No.1, and Jiali.
