Ajiao Bangshan

Bangshan is located in Zhengfang Township in the southwestern part of Shunchang County, 23 kilometers from the county seat. Its main peak stands at an elevation of 1,078 meters, covering an area of over 300,000 mu. The forest is lush green with a timber reserve of more than 400,000 cubic meters, and there are over 30,000 mu of bamboo forests, making it a major production area for timber, bamboo, and handmade paper.

Bangshan’s history can be traced back to the Song Dynasty when it was already a scenic area for summer retreats and leisure. It boasts the elegant and towering Qibao Peak, as well as quaint mountain villages such as Zhixia, Tianhu, and Jiatou, which are nestled against the hills. Connected to the Tiantai Mountain Scenic Area and bordering the Jisheng Chongshan Peak of Sha County, it forms a picturesque landscape of verdant mountains and clear waters, uniquely shaped peaks, flowing streams, small bridges, and idyllic rural scenes.

Here you can find thousand-year-old trees, relics related to the Monkey King, ancient langqiao bridges, the Baiyun Temple, and ancient villages. With its beautiful environment and pleasant climate, it is a mosquito-free zone with spring-like weather all year round. It serves as a habitat for migratory birds and is home to wildlife such as bears, serows, black deer, muntjacs, eagles, pheasants, and flying foxes.

The area offers the delicious taste of Nanjiang yellow goats, the freshness of Yanwei Lake fish, the rustic flavor of free-range chickens and ducks, the tanginess of citrus and strawberries, the sweetness of Zhaoshan peaches, the aroma of edible fungi, the delicacy of bamboo shoots, and the charm of bamboo and wooden products. The list goes on and on. Compared to Baozhu Village in the Mangdang Mountain National Scenic Area, it is arguably even better.

Ancient poet Qian Cheng once praised the place in verse: “The peaks of Jiuxian pierce the cold sky, while the Qibao peaks stacked like orchids lie close at hand. Yet in the end, love for the immortals pales before love for the treasures—visitors first point to this mountain to behold.” During the Song Dynasty, Zhu Xi climbed to Tianhu on Bangshan. Together with his friends Liu Zhongsou, Fang Bolin, and Liu Yanzhi, he drank from a mountain spring and wrote with admiration: “Living in seclusion with few companions, I shut my door to embrace solitude. But when good friends arrive here, my heart expands with joy. Especially in the cool early autumn, when the heat has retreated and clothes feel light. Together we stroll hand in hand, venturing afar to the eastern hills. We weave through secluded forests and peaks, then gaze down upon the flat plains and fields. Descending to ancient temples on the cliffs, we linger as we pour unfiltered wine. Chanting the ‘Song of Cutting Wood,’ even the hidden fish seem startled. I wish to join the likes of Ju and Ni, to till these rocky fields year after year.” He praised the beautiful landscape, pleasant surroundings, and the kind, hardworking, and amiable villagers.

The area is connected via the Beijing-Fuzhou Expressway link road. If a square were built here, along with bamboo lodge inns, and if the tourism brand were promoted—encouraging villagers to learn from rural Zhejiang and Baozhu Village—this could become a highlight of the green hinterland on the western side of the Taiwan Strait. Developing eco-tourism, welcoming tourist vehicles to stop and rest here, and allowing visitors to enjoy summer retreats and rural pleasures would be ideal.

The township government is 20 kilometers from the county seat. The total area of the township is 134.54 square kilometers. It currently administers 7 administrative villages (33 natural villages, 65 villager groups), 1 township-run forest farm, and 1 bamboo cultivation and harvesting farm, with a total population of 10,677."
