Temple of the Great Sage

The Temple of the Great Sage is located in front of the ruins of the Nantianmen at Baoshan Temple. It enshrines a joint memorial tablet for the brothers Sun Wukong, and was built around the same time as the Nantianmen. The two tombstones are inscribed with “Memorial Tablet of the Great Sage Equaling Heaven of Baofeng” and “Memorial Tablet of the Great Sage Reaching Heaven.” These tombs date back more than 200 years before Wu Cheng'en wrote *Journey to the West*, making them significant physical evidence of the ancient literary masterpiece.

Standing atop Baofeng Mountain, you can take in the breathtaking views all around: magnificent morning glow, splendid sunset clouds, and the ever-shifting mists. The weather on Baofeng Mountain is highly changeable, offering visitors a different spectacle each day. Especially remarkable are the frequent appearances of the Buddhist halo here, whose mysterious beauty attracts numerous travelers.
