The Yuankeng Ancient Town scenic area boasts rich historical and cultural tourism resources. Its characteristics include: a long history, with human activity dating back to the Neolithic Age, approximately 7,000 years ago. In the third year of Yong’an during the Eastern Wu period of the Three Kingdoms (over 1,700 years ago), it was established as an administrative township; early cultural development is evident, with study rooms appearing during the reign of Emperor Yizong of Tang and academies founded during the Later Jin Dynasty. Since ancient times, the town has valued literature and education, fostering a strong academic culture and producing many talented individuals. It is the hometown of prodigies from Shunchang, with the highest official titles including the King of Wuli and the Minister of Personnel. The area is also densely packed with historic residences. The scenic zone contains 158 ancient homes from the Ming and Qing dynasties, over ten of which were the residences of high-ranking officials, along with two former General’s Mansions. It serves as a veritable expo of ancient ancestral halls — originally home to more than 20 ancestral halls from the Ming and Qing periods, seven of which still stand today with grand and well-preserved gateways, magnificent structures, exquisite carvings, and high heritage value. There are also numerous ancient wells, paths, bridges, temples, steles, plaques, pavilions, and towers, each with its own fascinating historical anecdote and containing historical knowledge not found in today’s textbooks. Additionally, the scenic area features two newly built parks (“Yuanbao” Park and “Wenchang” Park). A Cultural Corridor has been created to encapsulate the history and classic cultural landscapes of Yuankeng. Along the Jiaoxi River, over 300 acres of pastoral scenery have been newly developed, including more than 100 acres of greenhouse strawberries, 60 acres of lotus ponds, as well as acres of corn, hanging melons, water chestnuts, tomatoes, and special varieties of hollow-heart vegetables.
