Gaoyang Building

The Gaoyang Building is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Fujian Province.

The Gaoyang Building is located in Hongjian Village, Jiaomei Town, Zhangzhou City, dating back to 1947.

Description: Built in 1947, it is an architectural fusion of Chinese and Western styles. Oriented southwest to northeast, it consists of a gate wall, front hall, water passage corridor, rear building, and side wing rooms, covering a total area of 540 square meters. The front hall has a width of three bays and a depth of three columns, with roof beams supported by walls; the rear section is a two-story Western-style building. The first floor has a width of three bays, with a staircase located behind a screen in the central bay leading up to the second floor; the second floor features a Western-style colonnade, with corridors on both sides connecting to the wing rooms.

In 2013, the Gaoyang Building was announced as part of the eighth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage protection units by the People’s Government of Fujian Province.

Protected area: An extension of 10 meters in all directions around the building.

Hongjian Village: Hongjian Village is situated at the foot of Wenpu Mountain and got its name because there is a mountain “rising abruptly high, like a wild goose gradually alighting on land.” Originally part of Tong’an County in Quanzhou, it is now under the jurisdiction of Jiaomei Town, Zhangzhou Taiwanese Investment Zone. Hongjian Village faces Haicheng Yuegang across the Jiulong River to the south, while the Yingxia Railway and the Jia (mei) Song (yu) Highway both run north through the area. It is just 40 kilometers from Xiamen Airport, offering very convenient transportation.

According to research, Hongjian had already emerged from the sea during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220 AD). Ancient settlers took advantage of the uniquely favorable environment of being close to both mountains and sea—“those living in the mountains farmed and herded, those by the sea fished”—to thrive and multiply.
