Ancient Taiji Village

Nestled within the Wufeng Mountain range in Xiufeng Township, Pinghe County, lies an ancient village spanning 3.6 square kilometers — Taiji Village. It was roughly formed between the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty and the Shunzhi and Kangxi eras of the Qing Dynasty, and refined through successive dynasties. The area was originally a settlement for the wealthy Zhu clan of Pinghe. The 18th-generation descendant of Zhu Xi, Zhu Yibo, who had escaped to this area to avoid war, planned and founded the village based on the natural conditions, mountain ranges, and terrain of Dashan. He designed it according to the principle of “gathering mountain energy and connecting to marsh qi — where mountain and marsh meet is the universe.” Amidst a mix of rustic and modern architecture, an “S”-shaped stream flows from east to west, splitting the lush green landscape into northern and southern halves — forming the boundary of a yin-yang fish. This division gave rise to the concept of “Taiji’s two elements” within the ancient village, with a round earthen building constructed at the “yang fish” (south of the stream) and another at the “yin fish” (north of the stream), each located at the eye of their respective fish: the Nanyang Building and the Juikui Building. Viewed from above, the entire village resembles a Taoist yin-yang taiji diagram, enveloped in a strong Taoist mystique.

In 1927, Zhu De captured Pinghe and visited Futang Village. Today, the village houses a Zhu De Memorial Hall displaying dozens of historical photos and artifacts, including a flashlight gifted by Zhu De himself. In November 2012, it was designated as a “Fujian Provincial Party History Education Base” by the Fujian Provincial Party History Research Office.
