Zhuangshang Building

The Zhuangshang Building is located in Zhuangshang Village, Daxi Town, Pinghe County. Constructed during the Shunzhi to Kangxi periods of the Qing Dynasty, it has a history of approximately 300 years. The tulou has a plan shape that is square in the front and round at the back, resembling a horseshoe. It spans 220 meters from north to south, with a perimeter of over 700 meters and a height of 9 meters. The tulou encloses a small hill nearly 10 meters high. The entire structure follows the contour of the hillside, featuring an irregular yet harmonious layout. With a floor area of over 9,000 square meters and covering a total area of 34,650 square meters, it is currently the largest tulou in terms of land coverage. The Zhuangshang Building was the ancestral home of Ye Chonghan, a leader of the Tiandihui (Heaven and Earth Society) during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and also serves as the residential area for the local Hakka people surnamed Ye. At one time, over 180 households and more than 1,300 Hakka residents lived here, making it the tulou with the highest population. For this reason, experts unanimously regard it as the true “King of Tulou.”

Zhuangshang Village: Located in the southwestern part of Daxi Town, Zhuangshang Village has a total population of 5,140, comprising 13 production teams; 60 village representatives, and 50 Party members. The area includes 5,723 mu of mountainous land and 3,447 mu of arable land. The Zhuangshang Tulou is a national key cultural relics protection unit and the largest square-shaped rammed earth building in China. Built during the Shunzhi to Kangxi periods of the Qing Dynasty, it is a hybrid earthen dwelling combining both unit-style and corridor-style architecture, constructed entirely from rammed earth.
