Pingle Bangyan Mansion

Pingle Bangyan Mansion, located in Zhenteng Village (formerly known as Tongling Village) of Xiapu, is the only surviving civilian palace-style residence in Zhangzhou with mid-Qing Dynasty architectural features. In the Year of Xin-Chou during the Qianlong reign (1781), Huang Guoliang was awarded the title of "Bangyan" (the second-place scholar in the imperial examination) and was conferred the honorific title of "Imperial Guard." He served with unwavering loyalty and his meritorious deeds were widely recognized. To commemorate his service, Emperor Qianlong allocated 13,300 taels of silver in the Year of Geng-Xu (1790) to construct the Bangyan Mansion in his hometown, Tongchang. Built against a hillside and oriented from east to west, the mansion is primarily constructed of brick and wood, covering a total area of over ten acres, with grand and imposing halls. Within the compound walls, the various buildings feature upturned eaves and ornate decorations, arranged with clear primary and secondary structures, rising progressively from front to back. The layout is complete and the overall momentum is majestic. The surrounding area features thousands of acres of pomelo orchards, along with Qing-era earthen buildings such as Chaoyang Tower and Yuqing Tower, which showcase unique architectural styles.
