Yude Building

Yude Building is located in Taxia Village, Shuyang Town, Nanjing County, Zhangzhou, Fujian Province. The front half of the building has four stories, which is no different from a typical tulou. However, the strange part is the rear half—though it is three stories high, it only has a semi-circular rammed earth wall covered with protective roof tiles, with nothing else behind it. People vividly call it the “apron building.”

The apron building was built in 1802, burned down by warlords in 1926, and rebuilt in 1972 with funding from Zhang Qingzhong, an overseas Chinese from Singapore and a clan relative. In front of the building flows an ever-busy small river—the “Taiji Stream.” This “S-shaped” stream winds through Taxia Village, nestled between mountain valleys, with 47 uniquely shaped Hakka dwellings—tulou—lining both banks. There is a circular tulou on each side of the village. In the evening, Yude Building takes on an especially classic charm under the glow of red lanterns.

Taxi:

Most taxis in Nanjing are privately operated, so you need to agree on the fare before getting in. Taxis are commonly available at train stations, bus stations, scenic areas, etc. Taking a taxi from the train station can be quite expensive, so it is recommended to first take a vehicle to the county town and then take a taxi from there.
