Stay in a local residence – Fujian Tulou “Four Dishes and One Soup”
“From above, it looks like a flower; from below, it resembles Potala. Five tulou are arranged along the mountain ridges, with their staggered earthen walls echoing the terraced fields, exuding an otherworldly mountain dwelling charm,” — this describes the Fujian Tulou.
Fujian Tulou are unique in style and hailed as “mythical mountain architecture.” Since most were built by the Hakka people, they are also called “Hakka Tulou.” Mainly distributed in Yongding, Nanjing, and Hua’an, these tulou are a source of pride for the Hakka and are considered treasures among Fujian’s residential architecture. They were officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 6, 2008.
Hakka Tulou are either built along the contours of the mountains
The houses of the tulou are not standalone structures; they stand side by side, circling around one another in layers.
A single tulou serves as the cohesive center of a clan. Each tulou is home to hundreds of families sharing the same surname, where generations have lived, multiplied, and enjoyed a life reminiscent of a utopian paradise.
When you gaze upon these dreamlike tulou, you’ll be struck by a profound sense of time’s depth—the blackened wooden boards and Spring Festival couplets exude an old yet warm family atmosphere, peaceful enough to make you never want to leave.
