The Wugengliao Earthen Blast Furnace Group is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Fujian Province.

Wugengliao Iron-Smelting Blast Furnace

Location: Shangtian Village, Shuyang Town, Nanjing County

Introduction: During the mass steel production campaign of the Great Leap Forward in 1958, Nanjing County established an ironworks in Wugengliao and constructed 24 earthen blast furnaces. As the steel produced did not meet quality standards, the county committee ordered the closure of the site the next year. Most of the furnaces were later moved elsewhere, leaving eight still in place. They serve as historical evidence of the “Great Leap Forward” era’s mass steel production movement.

Protected area: 50 meters outward from the furnace structures.

In 2009, the Wugengliao Iron-Smelting Blast Furnace was designated as part of the seventh batch of provincial-level cultural heritage sites by the Fujian Provincial People's Government.

In May 2013, the State Council (State Council Document [2013] No. 13) listed the Wugengliao Earthen Blast Furnace Group as part of the seventh batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level.

Shuyang Town: Located in the southwestern part of Nanjing County, Shuyang Town is traversed by the provincial highway Shan-Chang Line. It is a key border trade town at the junction of Nanjing, Pinghe, and Yongding counties, boasting a unique geographical advantage. The town covers a land area of 184 square kilometers, governs 21 autonomous villages and one neighborhood committee, with a total population of over 30,000. It has nearly 50,000 overseas Chinese and compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, making it one of the key hometowns of overseas Chinese in Zhangzhou City.
