Jingcheng Wenchang Pagoda

Jingcheng Wenchang Pagoda is a cultural relic protection unit of Fujian Province.

Jingcheng Wenchang Pagoda is located in Hulin Village, Jingcheng Town, Nanjing County, and dates back to the Ming Dynasty.

Description: Initially built in the 47th year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (1619), it underwent two renovations during the Qing Dynasty and served as a symbolic structure marking the water exit gateway of the former Nanjing County seat. The pagoda’s base has a diameter of 7.65 meters, side length of 3.08 meters, and a circumference of 25.35 meters. The pagoda stands 21.9 meters tall in total and is a seven-story, octagonal, pavilion-style dense-eave pagoda. The first story is built with granite slabs, with rammed earth filling the core and niches built along the inner walls. The upper stories gradually taper inward and feature arched gateways on different sides. The interior is hollow and square-shaped, and the spire is shaped like a gourd. Three historical steles remain inside and outside the pagoda: one is the inscribed stela for the pagoda’s construction authored by Yang Lianfang, Vice Commissioner of Guizhou, in the 6th year of the Tianqi era of the Ming Dynasty (1626); another is the “Wenchang Pagoda Stele Inscription” written by Magistrate Zhang Jiade, also known as Yufeng Decheng, in the 16th year of the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty (1836); and the third is the “Merit Stele Inscription” from the 4th year of the Tongzhi era of the Qing Dynasty (1865).

Protected area: An extension of 20 meters outward from all sides of the pagoda base.

In 2018, Jingcheng Wenchang Pagoda was designated as part of the ninth batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units by the People's Government of Fujian Province.
