Former Site Memorial of the Minnan Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party in Nanjing Tree Sea

The Former Site Memorial of the Minnan Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party in Nanjing Tree Sea is a Fujian provincial cultural relics protection unit, a classic red tourism destination, and a patriotic education base.

The Former Site Memorial of the Minnan Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party in Nanjing Tree Sea is located in Dalin Village, Nankeng Town. Originally serving as the frontline command post for the revolutionary struggles led by the Minnan Provincial Committee of the CCP, it consists of six old civilian houses and an old schoolhouse, covering an area of 120 square meters. It is currently a provincial-level cultural relics protection unit, a provincial-level base for Party history education, a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit and patriotic education base, a county-level cultural relics protection unit and patriotic education base, as well as a moral education base and youth education base.

The Tree Sea features continuous mountain ranges and forest waves resembling an ocean. Centered around Dalin, Beikeng, and Xiangxi in Nanjing, it spans dozens of administrative villages across Shancheng, Nankeng, Chuanchang, Kuiyang, Shuyang, and Meilin Towns, covering hundreds of square kilometers. It was an important part of the Minnan guerrilla zone during the Liberation War period.

In the later stages of the Anti-Japanese War, the Minnan Special Committee of the CCP dispatched comrades such as Lu Yan and Li Bingguang to carry out covert production and lead anti-reactionary self-defense struggles in the Nanjing Tree Sea area. In October 1945, the First Battalion of the Wangtao Detachment militarily opened up the Tree Sea. Leaders including Wei Jinshui, Secretary of the Minyue Border Provisional Committee, and Liu Yongsheng, Commander of the Wangtao Detachment, came to the Tree Sea to guide work. Looking over the endless virgin forests of the (Nan)jing-(Ping)he border area, Wei Jinshui joyfully named it the “Tree Sea.” In January 1947, the Minnan Provincial Committee of the CCP advanced into the Tree Sea to implement the decision to consolidate and develop the Tree Sea guerrilla forces. Subsequently, the Tree Sea Branch of the CCP and the Tree Sea Armed Workers' Corps (later establishing the Yonghejing County Working Committee) were successively formed. In July of the same year, an important military meeting was held in the Tree Sea to prepare for the establishment of the Minnan Detachment, deciding to end the period of concealment and move to Wushan to establish the Minnan Detachment. In June 1949, the Minnan Provincial Committee of the CCP moved into Baiyong Village in the Tree Sea in Dalin, leading struggles across Minnan until coordinating with the advancing army to liberate the entire Minnan region.

During the revolutionary struggles in the Tree Sea, many Communists, guerrilla fighters, and masses from the old revolutionary base areas fought bravely and made successive sacrifices. Among them, there were 36 incidents of “encirclement and suppression” by the Nationalist army, resulting in the martyrdom of 63 people, the burning of 518 houses, the relocation and consolidation of 11 villages, and over 100 households left homeless. They made tremendous contributions and sacrifices for the victory of the revolution and the liberation of Minnan.

To commemorate this glorious revolutionary tradition, Nanjing County, after several rounds of enrichment and arrangement, established the “Former Site Memorial of the Minnan Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party in Nanjing Tree Sea,” which officially opened in 2005. In 2014, the exhibition was redesigned. The memorial’s exhibition halls are divided into six sections based on the revolutionary historical timeline: “Anti-Reactionary Self-Defense and Building Strength,” “Advancing into the Tree Sea and Expanding the New Area,” “Persisting in Struggle and Growing Stronger,” “Stationing in Baiyong and Achieving Victory,” “Martyrs of the Tree Sea, Immortalized in History,” and “Unforgettable Tree Sea, Spirit Lives On.” The memorial displays nearly a thousand photos and a large number of revolutionary artifacts, providing detailed accounts of key historical figures and events from each period, offering insight into the revolutionary history and the post-liberation development of the old revolutionary base areas.
