Site of Hesheng Terrace

The Site of Hesheng Terrace is a cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

The Site of Hesheng Terrace is located 20 kilometers east of Funan County in Anhui Province, 1 kilometer southwest of Huanggang Town, and 200 meters east of the confluence of the Gu River and Taozi River. It is a key cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province. Commonly known as “Hesheng Terrace,” it is said that after General Yue Fei achieved a great victory over the Jin army, he celebrated his triumph here—hence the name.

The cultural accumulation layer is 3.55–4 meters thick, with dark gray soil. Below 3–3.5 meters from the surface lies a 0.55-meter-thick gray stratum containing large quantities of clam shells, pottery shards, and animal bones. In 1956, unearthed stone artifacts included one perforated stone spade, one stone axe, and multiple stone arrowheads; pottery items featured numerous pottery spinning whorls, as well as many tripod and li tripod leg fragments. Because the site is situated at the confluence of two rivers, it becomes surrounded by water during flood season, and the eastern edge facing the river has largely eroded and collapsed due to water scouring, forming a steep cross-section where the cultural layers are clearly visible. The cultural layers at the site are divided into two strata: the lower layer belongs to the Erlitou culture, while the upper layer belongs to the Shang Dynasty culture.

The site dates back to the Shang and Zhou dynasties and is located in Huanggang Town, Funan County. Currently, it appears as an elevated terrace surrounded by lower land, situated on the west bank of the Taozi River and north of the Meng River flood diversion channel. The terrace is 6 meters high, covering a total area of over 10,000 square meters. From the site's profile and surface, a large number of pottery and stone artifacts are exposed, including pottery ding tripods, li tripods, jars, basins, and stone axes.

Cultural Relic Protection

Approved as a key cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province in May 1998, it provides valuable physical material for the study of pre-Qin culture in the northern Huaihai region.

Protected Area: With the center of Hesheng Terrace as the base point, the protected zone extends 100 meters south, west, and north, and 50 meters east to the Taozi River.

Construction Control Zone: A buffer zone of 100 meters is designated beyond the protected area in all four directions—east, south, west, and north.

Huanggang Town: Huanggang Town is located in the eastern part of Funan County, Anhui Province, within the hilly area along the northern side of the Mengwa Flood Diversion Channel of the Huai River. It covers an area of 63 square kilometers and has a population of 50,168. Provincial Highway S328 runs through the town for 9.9 kilometers. It is 25 kilometers from National Highway 105, 30 kilometers from the Beijing-Kowloon Railway, and 33 kilometers from Fuyang Airport, offering convenient water and land transportation.
