Yong’an Ancient City

Yong’an Ancient City is located at Yongdianzi in Wangyan Town, 26 kilometers from the county seat of Funan and on the northern bank of the Hong River. The ruins stretch 1,500 meters in length and 1,000 meters in width. The surface soil layer is soft, grayish-brown in color, and mixed with clamshells, pottery shards, and broken bricks and tiles. Since the 1950s, ancient relics such as Chu “Yingyuan” coins, bronze mirrors from the Han, Tang, and Song dynasties, coins, and silver ingots have been unearthed successively. About one kilometer to the north lies a rammed-earth high platform, approximately a hundred meters in both length and width, and about two meters high. There are a dozen or so households living on it, and local villagers call it “Guchengzi,” which was a sub-city of Yong’an. There is an ancient well on the site with a constant water level that is still used for drinking today. Yong’an County was established during the Sui Dynasty and abolished in the sixth year of the Wude era of the Tang Dynasty (603). It was re-established during the Huichang era (841–846) and then abolished again in the early years of the Five Dynasties period.
