Letting Platform

The Letting Platform is a cultural relic protection unit of Fuyang City.

The Letting Platform is located about one li east of the old eastern gate of Fuyang, now within the site of the city’s brewery. It is an earthen mound standing 2.8 meters above the ground.

Legend has it that during summer and autumn, King Zhuang of Chu intended to build an observation platform within his domain at Qinqiu (present-day Fuyang). Stones were transported from as far as a thousand li away, and earth from about a hundred li. The project wasted manpower and resources without benefiting the people. Court officials tried to dissuade him, but the king, enraged, executed 72 ministers, leaving none daring to speak out. At this time, Zhu Yiji from Qinqiu gently advised the king. After speaking, fearing retaliation, he fled. When the king learned of this, he sent men to bring him back, accepted his advice, and halted the construction of the platform. This earthen mound was thus named the “Letting Platform” (Xiangrang Tai), symbolizing yielding and respect toward those who dared to speak the truth. Later generations built the Dongyue Temple on the platform’s base. After the founding of the People’s Republic, the temple fell into disrepair due to neglect and now only three old rooms remain. The base of the platform has gradually diminished over the years due to earth being taken from it, and urgent protection is needed. In 1980, it was listed as a cultural relic protection unit of Fuyang City.

Wenfeng Subdistrict: Established in April 1996, Wenfeng Subdistrict is the location of the municipal Party committee and government offices. It covers an area of 12.3 square kilometers, with a resident population of 112,854 and a floating population of 8,430. The subdistrict governs 13 communities, 6 schools and kindergartens, 21 party branches, and has 678 party members. Fuyang’s bustling Qinghe Road runs east-west through the area, while Yingzhou Road runs north-south. The subdistrict hosts numerous enterprises and institutions, with strong growth in the private economy. Historic sites such as the ancient Wenfeng Pagoda, Liu Gong Ancestral Hall, and Woniu Ridge are located here, creating a rich historical and cultural atmosphere.
