Anhui Science and Technology Museum serves as a base for science popularization and education.

Anhui Science and Technology Museum, situated in the scenic Hefei National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, spans nearly 20,000 square meters. The completed first phase covers 8,000 square meters, with a building area of 12,000 square meters, of which 4,000 square meters are used for exhibition and education. The museum features 8 exhibition halls. Its displays focus on fundamental scientific principles, future trends in technological development, major achievements in China’s national economic development, as well as the history of scientific and technological progress with distinctive Anhui regional characteristics.

Introduction

Anhui Science and Technology Museum is a public welfare institution invested in and built by the Anhui Provincial Government. Located in the Hefei High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, it covers an area of 12 mu, with 4,000 square meters dedicated to exhibitions. It serves as a new type of social science education base and a second classroom for youth education. Its functions include exhibition-based education, training programs, academic exchanges, and science consulting. Among these, the use of innovative exhibits to popularize scientific knowledge among young people, inspire scientific thinking, and cultivate scientific methods is its primary function. Anhui Science and Technology Museum is a large-scale public science and cultural education facility that implements the strategy of revitalizing Anhui through science and education, promotes scientific knowledge, and enhances the scientific and cultural literacy of the general public. It is managed and operated by the Anhui Association for Science and Technology.

The museum is divided into eight sections: the Front Hall, Central Hall, Hands-On Garden, and Exhibition Halls 1 through 5. Exhibition Hall 1 features the Magical Magnetism & Electricity Zone and the Intelligent Machinery Zone; Exhibition Hall 2 is the Aerospace Expo Zone; Exhibition Hall 3 is the Communications & Information Zone; Exhibition Halls 4 and 5 showcase the Development of Science and Technology in Anhui and its History. Its main functions are exhibition-based education, training education, and experimental education.

Its educational features emphasize the progress of science and technology and the future of science. While reflecting classical scientific principles, it also focuses on the dissemination of high and new technologies. It combines scientific accuracy, knowledge, and fun, encouraging audience participation. It not only imparts knowledge but also emphasizes the cultivation of the scientific spirit, scientific thinking, and scientific methodology.

Development Features

The exhibits at Anhui Science and Technology Museum primarily reflect fundamental scientific principles, future trends in technological development, major achievements in China’s national economic development, and the history of technological development with Anhui regional characteristics. These include over 170 sets of exhibits across various fields such as basic physics, electromagnetism, aviation and aerospace, life sciences, environmental science, information technology, energy and transportation, materials and manufacturing technologies, and foundational sciences. The Anhui Science and Technology Development Exhibition Area highlights the history and significant achievements of ancient science and technology in Anhui, as well as the current status and results of technological advancement. Some of the first-phase exhibits, such as the magnetic levitation globe, maglev train, electromagnetic gun, arm-wrestling robot, computer funhouse mirror, spinning chair ball toss, excavator, and Adventure spacecraft (i.e., motion simulator ride), are either pioneering or unique in China. There is also a Hands-On Garden designed specifically for elementary and middle school students—where they can make paper by hand or cut wood on a small woodworking machine and assemble it into various animals following instructions—to enhance visitor engagement. The exhibits at Anhui Science and Technology Museum integrate science, knowledge, fun, participation, and artistry. Leveraging modern display techniques such as sound, light, electricity, and computers, they vividly introduce scientific and technological knowledge to the public. Visitors can directly engage with the exhibits, experiencing the vital impact of modern science and technology on economic development and social progress, as well as the joy brought by science and technology.

The architecture of the Anhui Science and Technology Museum is uniquely designed—a tall triangular building whose overall appearance resembles a capital letter “A.” This creative design reflects both the regional characteristics of Anhui and the profound symbolism of contemporary science and technology as foundational and ever-reaching.

Functions of the Museum Complex

The main exhibition hall has a building area of 5,822 square meters and looks like a giant ship sailing through waves, symbolizing the vessel of science voyaging into the future. To the east of the main hall is a spherical exhibition space housing the province’s only planetarium and dome theater, with a building area of 1,513 square meters. Its appearance resembles a huge flying saucer, symbolizing the infinite mysteries of science. To the west of the main hall is the academic exchange, science training, and office area, covering 4,502 square meters. The overall architectural appearance changes continuously with distance and viewing angle, offering a sense of mysterious and ever-changing beauty. Anhui Science and Technology Museum features 14 exhibition areas with over 300 exhibits, including aircraft simulation cockpits, energy shuttle machines, information technology, mechanics, human body mysteries, machinery, mathematics, children’s zone, acoustics, optics, electromagnetism, the Yang Zhenning Exhibition Hall, the planetarium and dome theater, and a 4D motion theater. These exhibits are highly scientific, fun, artistic, and interactive, with 80% allowing hands-on operation by visitors. As the largest science education base in Hefei and even Anhui Province, since its official opening on May 26, 2002, the museum has won enthusiastic participation and widespread praise from all sectors of society, especially young people. Since its opening, with the care and support of leaders and relevant departments at all levels, Anhui Science and Technology Museum has received millions of visitors from within the province, across the country, and around the world, including many central, provincial, and municipal leaders, leaders from other provinces and cities, renowned scientists from home and abroad, and foreign guests. It has created extensive social influence, achieved positive social benefits, opened up new prospects for science education in Hefei, and made significant contributions.
