Chaohu Peninsula Wetland Park — Creating the Largest Reed Catkins Viewing Area

Spanning the Zhongmiao Subdistrict, Huanglu Town, and Tongyang Town in the northern peninsula of Chaohu Lake, the proposed Chaohu Peninsula National Wetland Park covers a total planned area of 1,052.1 hectares. It stretches from the Zhongmiao Subdistrict in the west, to Chaohu Lake in the south, to Binhu Avenue in the north, and to Jiyu River in the east. Of this, the wetland area is 623.45 hectares, accounting for 59.2% of the total. It mainly includes the Luxi Wetland, Huatang River Wetland, Tongyang River Wetland, Jiyu River Wetland, and the area inside Binhu Avenue.

The wetland park contains various types of wetlands such as rivers, reservoir ponds, and lakes. Their unique flora and fauna create a vibrant and colorful wetland landscape. A total of 398 species of vascular plants from 75 families have been surveyed in the planned area, among which wild water caltrop is listed as a National Class II Key Protected Wild Plant. In addition, surveys show that the park is home to 106 animal species from 54 families, including 55 bird species from 25 families. Commonly seen birds include the grey heron, intermediate egret, green-winged teal, and mallard. The lesser coucal, black-eared kite, and white-tailed goshawk are listed as National Class II Key Protected Animals, holding significant conservation value.

The park’s planned area is divided into an ecological conservation zone, ecological restoration zone, science education and publicity zone, rational use zone, and management service zone. The restoration and reconstruction zone is mainly located on both sides of the Huatang River and Qingcao River, as well as the southern area of Wangjiatuan and the eastern side of the Tongyang River. Here, a spectacular and exquisite reed marsh landscape will be created, making it the largest reed catkins viewing destination in China. Coupled with infrastructure such as wooden boardwalks and small pleasure boats, visitors can immerse themselves in the environment, turning the area into a natural base for photography enthusiasts and painters.
