Yu Zhengxie (1775–1840)

A literary and historical scholar of the Qing Dynasty. His courtesy name was Lichu, and he was from Yi County, Anhui Province. He passed the imperial examination for the juren degree during the Daoguang reign. Devoted to scholarship, he would read any book he could obtain and always made annotations upon reading. The “Biographies of Seven Hundred Notables of the Qing Dynasty” states that he “focused on the teachings of Han Confucian scholars in his study of the classics and did not get entangled in commentaries.” He was particularly skilled in discussing celestial phenomena and geography, excelled in textual criticism, and produced many incisive treatises. He once worked at the residence of Chen Yongguang in Xincheng, proofreading “Gu’s Essentials of Geography.” In his later years, he served as an education commissioner in Jiangsu and was the head instructor at Xiyin Shushe in Jiangning. He passed away due to illness. His works include “Poems from the Four Nourishing Studios,” “Records of Overseas Affairs,” and “General Gazetteer of the Two Lakes,” among others.
