Dou Shan Street

Dou Shan Street is located within the ancient city of She County. It gets its name from the nearby Dou Mountain and is part of the first-tier protected area of this historic and cultural city. Known as the hometown of Huizhou merchants, Dou Shan Street is a tourist and cultural site that brings together ancient residences, old streets, traditional carvings, historic wells, and ancient memorial archways.

Constructed during the Ming and Qing dynasties, Dou Shan Street boasts classic Huizhou-style dwellings such as the Wang family residence, the official compound of the Yang family, the ancient private school known as the Xu family hall, the multi-generational merchant house of the Pan family, a thousand-year-old well, and the rare wooden-shield memorial archway — the “Ye Family Festival Archway” — among others. These sites together form a long historical scroll, quietly recounting ancient yet poignant stories. The narrow lane paved with bluestone slabs stretches far into the distance, evoking the “rainy alley” depicted in Dai Wangshu’s poetry.
