Former Residence of Huang Binhong

The Former Residence of Huang Binhong is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Anhui.

Huang Binhong was born in 1864 and died in 1955. His given name was Zhi, courtesy name Pucun, and art name Binhong. A native of She County, he was an eminent traditional Chinese painter who enjoyed equal fame with Qi Baishi, earning the title “Huang of the South, Qi of the North.” He was born in 1864 in Jinhua City, Zhejiang Province. After returning to his hometown to take the children’s examination in the second year of the Guangxu reign (1876), he lived here for nearly 30 years. This brick-and-timber folk house, built during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, has a history of over 300 years. It was constructed by Huang Binhong’s ancestors and currently consists of three parts: the Foundry Garden, bedroom, and studio.

The residence is located in Xitan Village, She County. Surrounded by lush trees and beautiful scenery, it is a Qing Dynasty building with a brick-and-timber structure. The main house is a three-bay building with a front corridor and courtyard. Huang Binhong named the main residence “Binhong Thatched Cottage” and “Hong Cottage.” There is a small front yard in front of the corridor, and on the western side of the courtyard, near the steps, stands a pavilion with an exquisite Taihu rock—this structure is called “Jade Forest Studio,” also known as “Stone Fungus Room” or “Stone Fungus Pavilion.” Huang Binhong was not only an outstanding master of art but also a staunch patriot.

The “Foundry Garden” in the residence got its name because in 1907, Huang Binhong secretly participated in revolutionary activities to overthrow the Qing Dynasty. He helped cast coins here to support the anti-Qing struggle for the Tongmenghui (Chinese Revolutionary Alliance). In 1984, the 120th anniversary of Huang Binhong’s birth, grand commemorative events were held in his hometown. The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications issued a commemorative stamp souvenir sheet featuring Huang Binhong. Government funding was allocated for a comprehensive renovation of the former residence, and extensive materials were collected and exhibited for public viewing. The site was opened to the public as the “Huang Binhong Memorial Hall.” The study and bedroom remain largely as they were originally.

Huang Binhong (January 27, 1865 – March 25, 1955), originally from She County, Huizhou, Anhui Province, was born in Jinhua, Zhejiang, and grew up in his ancestral home, Tandu Village, She County. His original name was Maoshu, later changed to Zhi, with the courtesy name Pucun and the art name Binhong, and also used the pseudonym Yuxiang. He was a modern-era painter renowned for his landscape paintings and regarded as a master of the genre. At the age of six, he copied landscape albums collected in his family by Shen Tingrui (Chuyá). He studied flower-and-bird painting under Zheng Shan and Chen Chongguang. Balancing the study of tradition with field sketching, he was initially influenced by the “Xin’an School of Painting,” characterized by dry brushwork and light ink, resulting in a simple and elegant style — referred to as the “White Binhong” period...
