Taibai Tower in She County

Taibai Tower in She County is a cultural relic protection unit of Huangshan City.

Taibai Tower is situated to the west of Taiping Ancient Bridge and is a key stop along the route from Huangshan to Qiandao Lake. This two-story tower features overhanging eaves and cantilevered beams, embodying classic Huizhou architectural style. The building houses historical stone steles, rubbings of ancient ink works, and poetic couplets by renowned figures from different eras. According to legend, during the Tianbao era of the Tang Dynasty, the poet Li Bai searched for the She County hermit Xu Xuanping but failed to meet him at the banks of the Lian River. In commemoration of this event, Taibai Tower was built where Li Bai once drank. Visitors can climb the tower to enjoy panoramic views of the mountains, waters, ancient bridges, and pagodas to the west of the city.

The Poet Immortal Li Bai (February 8, 701 – December 762), courtesy name Taibai, also known as Qinglian Jushi or the “Exiled Immortal,” and nicknamed Li Twelve, was a poet of the Tang Dynasty, often mentioned alongside Du Fu as “Li-Du.” Li Bai’s works are compiled in the “Collected Works of Li Taibai,” with representative poems including “Quiet Night Thought,” “Drinking Alone under the Moon,” and “Dreaming of the Goddess of the Luo River.” He brought ancient romanticist literature to new heights, mastering the song-style poetry and seven-character quatrains to levels rarely matched by later poets.
