Shangbin Archway

Shangbin Archway is a cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

Shangbin Archway is located in She County, Huangshan City, dating back to the Ming Dynasty.

Built in 1476, it is a double-pillar single-bay three-story structure made of white hemp stone. The south-facing lintel is inscribed with the ten characters “京闱乡贡进士江衷之门” (“Gate of Jiang Zhong, Provincial Scholar of the Imperial Examination”), the moon beam features a carved carp ornamentation, the upper lintel is adorned with a relief of two phoenixes facing the sun, and the railing panel is engraved with the two characters “尚宾.” The north-facing moon beam is decorated with a peony pattern, the lintel is inscribed with “风云庆会” (Gathering of Auspicious Clouds and Winds), and the upper lintel features a relief of two cranes soaring through clouds. The corner brackets are fitted with diagonal and maple arches, preserving the style of bracket arms from China’s Jin and Yuan periods. It is now a key cultural relic protection unit of She County.

Located to the right of the main gate of She County Middle School, formerly the site of the county Confucian school, it was built in the 12th year of the Chenghua reign during the Ming Dynasty (1476). Made of granite, it is a double-pillar single-bay three-story structure with a bay width of about 3 meters and a height of approximately 5 meters. The south-facing lintel is inscribed with ten characters reading “京闱乡贡进士江衷之门,” the upper lintel features a relief of two phoenixes facing the sun, and the moon beam is decorated with a carved carp motif; the railing panel is inscribed with the two characters “尚宾.” The north-facing moon beam is adorned with a peony pattern, the lintel is engraved with the four characters “风云庆会,” and the upper lintel features a relief of two cranes flying through the clouds. Structurally, the side protective panels feature eight outward extensions, with diagonal and maple arches placed in the middle, representing a typical style of bracket construction from the Song and Yuan dynasties.

In 2012, Shangbin Archway was designated as part of the seventh batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units by the People's Government of Anhui Province.

Protected area: A perimeter of 5 meters extending outwards from the archway.

Construction control zone: An area extending 50 meters outward beyond the protected zone on all sides.
