Xinzhou Site

The Xinzhou Site is a cultural heritage site protected by Huangshan City.

The Xinzhou Site is located in Huicheng Town, She County, dating back to the Neolithic Age.

The cultural layer of the site is about 2.5 meters deep and is divided into five layers. The first layer is surface soil, the second layer contains accumulations from the Tang and Song dynasties, yielding broken porcelain pieces, tiles, and other artifacts. The third layer unearthed pottery, stone tools, and a small number of small jade items. The pottery is mainly coarse sandy red pottery, with a small amount of clay gray pottery and stamped pottery, predominantly decorated with cord patterns. Key vessel types include concave round-bottomed cord-marked jars, jue vessels, and spouted jars, often featuring a folded rim design. Stone tools consist of arrowheads, adzes, axes, knives, and more, with one stone knife featuring an intricately incised kui-dragon pattern. Layers four and five yielded abundant remains, with little difference between them. There are over 100 stone tools, including arrowheads, crescent-shaped knives, plows, spears, axes, chisels, and net sinkers, some of which are polished on only one side. Pottery remains dominated by coarse sandy red pottery, followed by coarse sandy gray pottery and polished black clay pottery. Most items are plain, with only a few decorated with incised lines, string patterns, and appliqué. Major vessel types include tripods, dou stems, pitchers, jars, bowls, gui-shaped vessels, and lids. Notably distinctive are jar-shaped tripods (coarse sandy gray pottery with folded rims, flared bodies, a raised string band around the middle, and flat chisel-shaped feet) and gui-shaped vessels (wide folded rims, deep bellies, drooping lower sections, round bottoms, tall ring feet, and undecorated surfaces). The Xinzhou Site spans the Neolithic Age, Shang and Zhou dynasties, Han dynasty, and Song dynasty, reflecting a long history and rich cultural content.

Significance

It holds significant value for studying the ancient history of Huizhou and even the entire southern Anhui region.
