Former Residence of Hong Xuefei

The former residence of Hong Xuefei is a cultural relic protection unit of Huangshan City.

The former residence of Hong Xuefei is located in Sanyang Town, She County, dating back to the Qing Dynasty.

The residence was built by Hong Xuefei’s grandfather during the late Qing and early Republican period. The main house and side rooms form a “7” shape layout, with a courtyard in the middle. The main house, Chun De Tang, is a three-bay, two-story wooden structure, while the side rooms consist of five-bay, two-story wing rooms. The entire building features a post-and-lintel wooden frame, covering a total area of approximately 432.1 square meters.

In 2010, the former residence of Hong Xuefei was designated by She County as a protected site under Huangshan City’s “Hundred Villages and Thousand Buildings” preservation project. In March 2015, the residence was restored to its original appearance, with partial expansion of the courtyard, and was transformed into the Hong Xuefei Opera Art Exhibition Hall.

Hong Xuefei (1941–1994), female, was from Sanyangkeng, She County, and was a first-class actress. She developed a love for Kunqu opera from an early age. In 1958, she was admitted to the Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre, where she studied under Han Shichang, Bai Yunsheng, Ma Xianglin, among others, specializing in female roles. Within half a year, she performed in *Qin Tao*, showcasing her talent. After several years of training, she performed forty to fifty female-role plays, gaining fame in the Kunqu opera circle. In 1966, she transferred to the Beijing Peking Opera Troupe and switched to performing Peking opera. She successfully portrayed the character Sister Aqing in the modern Peking opera *Shajiabang* and participated in performance tours in North Korea and Iran.
