Zhang Fengkang’s Ancestral Home is located in Chakou Town, She County, dating back to the Republican era.

The hometown of Zhang Fengkang, the first Chinese person to set foot on Antarctica, is Lushan Village in Chakou Town, southern She County. This is a scenic mountain village built halfway up a hill, with a population of two to three hundred. The houses are mostly small and modest, and several century-old camphor trees form the water outlet. As you enter the village through the alleys, the view suddenly opens up to reveal three tall residences standing in a row—this is the “Zhang Fengkang’s Ancestral Home,” a municipal-level key cultural relic protection unit newly designated by the Huangshan Municipal People's Government in 2017.

Zhang Fengkang (1922– ) is from Lushan Village, Chakou Township, She County. A Chinese-American scholar and geophysicist, he later worked in scientific research at the U.S. National Water Resources Experimental Center. In his early years, he attended Huizhou Provincial Middle School in Wan’an, Xiuning, and graduated in 1940 (the 29th year of the Republic of China), then was admitted to National Hunan University. He graduated in 1944 (the 33rd year of the Republic of China). He worked in places such as the Yumen Oilfield in Gansu and Ansteel in the northeast. In the early 1950s, he went to Saint Louis University in the United States to study geophysics, seismology, and earthquake engineering, earning a master’s degree in 1958.
