Zhuxiang Scenic Area
Zhuxiang Scenic Area is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.
Zhuxiang Village is situated in the northern part of Jingde County, 12 kilometers from the county seat. It is historically known as one of the “Three Villages within Ten Li” along with Tangcun and Qiaoting. National Highway 205 and Provincial Highway 217 intersect less than 1 kilometer from the village, while the Caidaiguo Defense Highway and the Daxi River encircle the village. The administrative area includes the Zhuxiang Village Committee, covering 18 villager groups with a total area of 12 square kilometers. The village has a total population of 2,036, including 25 non-agricultural residents and 1,450 laborers. There are over 2,040 mu of paddy fields and more than 340 mu of dry land, most of which is planted with ramie and mulberry trees, aside from a small portion used as orchards.
Zhuxiang Village is an ancient settlement established over 1,300 years ago and is one of the five major ancient cultural villages in Jingde County. The houses are all built in the Hui-style architecture. It boasts profound cultural heritage, a long humanistic history, and unique architectural landscapes. Legend has it that it was the residence of descendants of Zhu Xi, a renowned Neo-Confucian scholar of the Song Dynasty. Currently, 47 well-preserved ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties remain. The residential layouts are both rational and distinctive, featuring typical Hui-style architectural characteristics. There is also a relatively well-preserved private school—“Fushan Academy”—and an old pawnshop known as the “Tea Brand.” The Zhuxi River, which runs through the center of Zhuxiang Village, was manually excavated by the ancestors of the Zhu family, forming a unique water system where water flows from north to south. There are nine wells along and in the river used for drinking in ancient times, and 13 stone bridges built from huge bluestones span the river. These nine wells and 13 bridges are referred to as the “Nine Wells and Thirteen Bridges.” Local elders say this signifies that Zhuxiang Village would produce nine imperial scholars, and the Zhu family would rule for 13 dynasties. The “Xianyun Pool” upstream of the Zhuxi River was where one of the Zhu brothers, Zhu Zedan—a Hanlin academician of the Ming Dynasty—studied by moonlight. His handwritten cliff inscription “Xianyun Tan Ying” (Reflections of Idle Clouds in the Pool) is still clearly visible, and the ruins of an ancient stage by the pool can still be faintly seen. The “Dragon Pool Waterfall” cascades in three tiers, while the “Guanyin Temple” and “Dragon King Temple” reflect the ancients’ prayers for prosperity and favorable weather.
