Zhangshan Grand Canyon Scenic Area

Zhangshan Grand Canyon, also known as the Valley of the Great Man, is located in the Dazhang Mountain range east of Jixi County in southern Anhui. In ancient times, the Yellow Emperor, accompanied by Rongchengzi and Fuxu Gong, came here to gather herbs and refine elixirs. Today, relics such as the Emperor’s Tomb and the Prime Minister’s Grave can still be found in the mountains. As a result, Dazhang Mountain was historically known as the Land of the Three Sovereigns, Three Kings’ Mountain, or Zhangfeng. It marked the boundary between the Wu and Yue states during the Spring and Autumn period, and in the Qin Dynasty, the Zhang Commandery was established, named after the mountain.

The grand canyon scenic area serves as the southern gateway to the Qingliang Peak National Nature Reserve. It boasts an exceptionally pristine ecosystem and functions as a natural oxygen bar. The area is home to 43 species of nationally precious flora and 13 species of nationally protected fauna. There are over 50 scenic spots, including Hundred-Zhang Rock, Gourd Pool, the “Emperor’s Divine Statue,” Dragon View Pool, Heaven’s Gate Split Open, Dragon Gate Spring, Crown Top Blooming Flowers, Madonna Waterfall, Emperor’s Tomb, Alchemy Workshop, and Divine Turtle Summit Rock.

Hundred-Zhang Rock stands 460 meters high, 180 meters wide, and is a single monolith tilted at an 85-degree angle. Its surface is smooth as a mirror, resembling an enormous bell lying on the ground, towering into the clouds. After rain, its sheen becomes strikingly vivid, and Buddha’s halo occasionally appears—a truly unique sight.

Transportation

The scenic area is 22 kilometers from Jixi County. Buses to Zhangshan depart from the county town, with a fare of 6.5 RMB.
