Tagedge Bank Pavilion

Tagedge Bank Pavilion is a cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

Tagedge Bank Pavilion is located in Taohuatan Town, 40 kilometers west of Jing County, with the Dongyuan Ancient Ferry below it. Legend has it that this is where Wang Lun, a local patron of the Tang Dynasty, bid farewell to Li Bai. At the time, Li Bai was invited by Wang Lun to tour Taohuatan and was seen off by Wang Lun at the ferry upon departure. Wang Lun and others sang and danced to see him off. Later generations, in memory of the friendship between Li Bai and Wang Lun, named the Dongyuan Ancient Ferry “Tagedge Ancient Bank.” In the Ming Dynasty, locals built the “Tagedge Bank Pavilion” on the bank, which was rebuilt during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty and restored again in the early years of the Republic of China.

Tagedge Bank Pavilion is an ancient riverside structure. Its location is strategically chosen so that upon exiting the pavilion, one is right at the boarding point for the ferry, while entering it leads directly to the main street of Nanyang Ancient Town — making both entry into and exit from Nanyang Town extremely convenient. Moreover, exiting the pavilion faces Taohuatan directly, whose waters are cool, clear, and mirror-like, with ripples dancing on the surface. The peculiar rock formation known as the “Elephant’s Trunk” extends into the pond, creating the impression of an elephant drinking water. The bank of the pond is home to Xiantun, atop which stands the “Huai Xian Pavilion.” Viewed through the archway of Tagedge Bank Pavilion, it resembles a beautifully framed landscape painting. Stepping inside the pavilion, a series of steps reveal, at their summit, the curving street ahead. The cobblestone-paved road winds invitingly upward, but after just a few more steps, it flattens out into a straight path. The bustling streets of Nanyang Town come into full view — a contrast of openness and enclosure, serenity and vibrancy, natural beauty and human craftsmanship. These two distinctly different scenes on the front and back sides of Tagedge Bank Pavilion offer visitors a rich and layered experience.

The pavilion has two levels: the ground floor serves as a passageway, with the entrance opening directly onto the main street of ancient Nanyang Town and the exit leading to the ferry. From the upper floor, one can lean on the railing to enjoy the views of Taohuatan and gaze across at attractions on the opposite bank such as Wancun Old Street, the Rainbow Window, Wang Lun’s Tomb, and the Taibai Tower.
