The "Jiande Man" Site at Turtle Cave (Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit)

Located behind Turtle Mountain in Xin Qiao Village, Lijia Town. Excavated in 1974, after removing approximately 50 cm of modern overburden to expose the original deposit, the fossil-bearing stratum was found to be divided into upper and lower parts: the upper part consists of purplish-red clay about 35 cm thick, and the lower part is yellowish-red clay about 110 cm thick. A total of one right upper canine tooth belonging to Homo sapiens type, as well as a number of mammal fossils including giant pandas, Stegodon orientalis, and the Chinese rhinoceros, were unearthed. This discovery marks the first of its kind in Zhejiang Province, and its age roughly corresponds to the later stage of the Late Pleistocene.
