The South Peak Pagoda and North Peak Pagoda of Meicheng

The South Peak Pagoda and North Peak Pagoda of Meicheng are cultural relics protection units of Zhejiang Province.

There are two ancient pagodas in Jiande’s Meicheng Ancient Town. One is located on Gaofeng Mountain to the east of the town and is called the North Peak Pagoda. Because it lies in the mao (east-northeast) direction, it is also known as the Mao Pagoda. The other stands on Xunfeng Mountain, which faces the town across the river. Since Xunfeng is to the south of the town, this pagoda is named the Xun Pagoda, or the South Peak Pagoda.

The twin pagodas have been famous scenic spots since the Ming Dynasty. In the eighth year of the Hongzhi reign (1495), "Twin Pagodas Herald Excellence," one of the "Eight Scenic Views of Yanling" inscribed by Li Dehui, the prefect of Yan Prefecture at the time, refers to these two pagodas.

On October 7, 2019, the South Peak Pagoda and North Peak Pagoda of Meicheng were included in the eighth batch of Major National Historical and Cultural Sites in China.
