Former Site of Zhou Enlai's Speech

The Former Site of Zhou Enlai's Speech is a cultural relic protection unit of Hangzhou City.

A monument inscribed with “Former Site of Zhou Enlai's Speech” stands in the pavilion, with the inscription personally written by the renowned artist Liu Kaiqu. In March 1939, Zhou Enlai delivered a speech here on unity against Japanese aggression to military and political personnel of the Western Zhejiang Administrative Office, political work team members, trainees of the cadre training class, as well as teachers and students of the Provisional Middle School of Western Zhejiang.

The memorial pavilion is exquisitely designed and unique in style. The surrounding area is lush with pine and cypress trees, fragrant with flowers and leaves. From the top of the pavilion, one can clearly view the scenery of Tianmu Mountain.

Introduction

The Zhou Enlai Speech Memorial Pavilion is located at the former site of the “Baizi Hall” to the east of the Weituo Hall. In 1989, the People’s Government of Lin’an County built it to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Zhou Enlai’s visit to West Tianmu.

Zhou Enlai was a Marxist, proletarian revolutionary, statesman, military strategist, and diplomat. He was one of the principal leaders of the Communist Party of China and the People’s Republic of China, one of the founders of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, and the Premier of the People’s Republic of China (1949–1976). Originally from Shaoxing, Zhejiang, he was born in Huai’an, Jiangsu. After graduating from Nankai School in Tianjin in 1917, he went to Japan to study. He returned to China in 1919 and entered Nankai University in September.
