Thanks to Ruiyan Mountain’s favorable ecological conditions, abundant wildlife, and intact plant communities—particularly its rare natural broadleaf forests, seldom found along the southeastern coast—it was designated as a national forest park by the Ministry of Forestry in 1991. Descending the mountain path, you can admire the distinctive scenery and local character of the Ruiyan Forest Farm. Keep your eyes peeled and you might even spot some of the rare animals that make their home deep in the forest. Of course, wandering along the forest trails, you’ll also come across lush groves of bamboo planted long ago with the small bamboo whips used by the legendary figure Zhang Guolao to herd his donkey. In spring and summer, the bamboo shoots grow vigorously and silently, as if daring to “vie with the heavens for height”! The Ruiyan Forest Farm is rich in both flora and fauna, featuring arbor forests, evergreen broadleaf forests, coniferous forests, and 40 hectares of economic forest. The forest park is home to many precious tree species, including ginkgo, cephalotaxus fortunei, salix arbusculoides, zelkova serrata, ulmus davidiana var. japonica, choerospondias axillaris, pseudotaxus chienii, and liquidambar formosana. Most trees on the mountainsides are over twenty to thirty years old. At the foot of the mountain lies an ancient tree group of about 7 hectares, with towering canopies and the majestic sound of wind rustling through the pines. Even more remarkably, the deep forests are still home to wild animals such as river deer, sika deer, serows, squirrels, pangolins, eagles, crows, and magpies. Among them, the rare Ruiyan Temple salamander stands out—it is known in the animal world as the “Zhenhai Salamander” and is a second-class nationally protected animal.
