Liangwang Mountain, anciently known as “Tongbai Mountain,” is located within Qiantong Town, Ninghai County. It got its name during the Northern and Southern Dynasties when Emperor Liang Xuan took refuge here to escape the chaos caused by Hou Jing. With an elevation of 768 meters, the mountain features steep ridges, peculiar peaks and rocks, deep valleys and quiet streams, flying waterfalls and flowing springs, all set against a backdrop of lush greenery — a breathtakingly beautiful sight. Throughout history, numerous poets and scholars have left their verses and footprints here. Since the Song Dynasty, it has been recognized as one of the famous mountains in southern China. The great Ming Dynasty traveler Xu Xiake once praised the scenery of Liangwang Mountain as “peaks crowned with flourishing foliage mirrored in water, trees standing gracefully alongside uniquely shaped stones.”

The Liangwang Mountain scenic area includes the Middle Stream Scenic Zone, South Stream Scenic Zone, and Wailiao Leisure Area. It also features the first lodging site of Xu Xiake as recorded at the beginning of his Travel Diaries, the Rock Where Xu Xiake Mounted His Horse, the retreat site of the Southern Song literatus Hong Hao, Gongtai Academy, Liangyan Rock, Shuangmen Cave, Immortal Tower, Hidden Character Stone, Tiger Leap Gorge, One-Line Sky, Nine Heavens Waterfall, Colored Stone Beach, Three Valleys and Six Deep Pools with Eighteen Waterfalls — a wealth of cultural and unique natural attractions that have earned it the title “The Most Unique Mountain in Southern China.”

The Waterside Walking Trail “A landscape without mountains or water is incomplete.” This walking trail offers visitors an ideal place to get close to nature and enjoy the water.

Liangwang Buddhist Temple The Ming Dynasty Chongzhen-era Ninghai County Annals record: Liangwang Mountain, thirty li to the west, during the final years of Emperor Liang Wudi’s reign, when Hou Jing rebelled and warlord Chen Baxian rose in arms, Prince Yiyang sought refuge in a Buddhist temple then known as “Shaochang.” After escaping danger, he later became Emperor Liang Xuan. The place gained fame through the “imperial benevolence,” and the temple, originally called “Shaochang,” was renamed “Liangwang Temple.”

Hidden Character Stone On sunny days, there are no visible marks, but when wet from rain, the characters “Namo Amitabha Buddha” appear — a wonder of Liangwang Mountain.

Liangyuan Pool According to the Ninghai County Annals, Liangyuan Pool is a sacred site where locals pray for rain. Every midsummer, the phenomenon known as the “Dragon Rolling in the Pool” occurs, resembling the roar of a giant dragon.
