Hengshan Island

Hengshan Island, also known as Little Putuo, is located on the southeastern side of the Shizikou sea area in Qiangjiao Town. Stretching from north to south, it is 0.76 kilometers long, 0.23 kilometers wide, covering an area of 0.175 square kilometers, with its highest point at an elevation of 51 meters. The island appears horizontal from all viewing angles and is shaped like the Chinese character “山” (mountain), hence its name.

The island is home to Zhenfu Temple, which was originally divided into front and rear halls. Its foundation dates back to the Ming Dynasty, while the beams and columns feature Qing Dynasty designs. Known as “Little Putuo,” it attracts a continuous stream of worshippers from Fenghua, Ningbo, and Ninghai. The island is covered with lush forests and tall bamboo, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere. The surrounding rocks, shaped over years by the constant pounding of sea waves, form unique sea-eroded caves and cliffs, presenting a captivating landscape. A visit here feels like stepping into a “fairyland on earth.”

Since the Ming Dynasty, logging has been prohibited on the island, resulting in ancient trees that now cover the entire area. In more recent history, Chiang Kai-shek and his son retreated from the mainland to Taiwan and were said to have set sail from this very location. These historical traces lend an air of mystery and magic to the 12 small islands, which together cover just 2 square kilometers.

Today, Qiangjiao has built a 3,000-ton-capacity dock, making it a natural harbor and seafood production base for Ningbo. Yet, the remains of ancient military strongholds, historic buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, as well as ancient sites such as the Siguping Taoist Temple and the Little Putuo Shrine, remain well-preserved. A trip here offers opportunities to reflect on history, admire spectacular seascapes, and savor freshly caught seafood.

Transportation

After driving to Ninghai, you will need to take a chartered boat to Hengshan Island. In summer, the round-trip fare is about 40 yuan per person. During the off-season, when there are fewer visitors, pricing is based on the boat and ranges from 200 to 300 yuan depending on the type of boat.
