Former Residence of Pan Tianshou

The former residence of Pan Tianshou is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhejiang Province.

The former residence of Pan Tianshou is located in Guanzhuang, Chengguan Town, Ninghai County. Pan Tianshou was born in the “Main House” (Dafang) on the eastern side. He spent his childhood here until he enrolled in Zhejiang First Normal School. In 1920, after graduating, he returned to his hometown to teach and got married here. In 1923, he left home to teach in Shanghai, and after settling in Hangzhou in 1928, he rarely came back. It wasn’t until 1962, when Pan Tianshou visited Ninghai as a National People’s Congress delegate for an inspection, that he once again stayed here to reminisce with fellow villagers. In 1985, the People’s Government of Ninghai County decided to restore the “Former Residence of Pan Tianshou” to commemorate this world-renowned art master from their hometown. In 1993, it was designated as a county-level cultural relics protection unit, and in 1998, it became a provincial-level patriotic education base.

In March 1997, on the 100th anniversary of Mr. Pan Tianshou’s birth, the Ninghai County Government allocated a special fund of more than 300,000 yuan, along with donations from his relatives, to fully restore the former residence, which was then officially opened to the public. To make it easier for visitors to pay their respects, a straight and wide asphalt road (named Tianshou Road) was specially built leading directly to Guanzhuang. The square next to the road was also named Pan Tianshou Square, and the Chengbei Middle School in Chengguan Town, Ninghai County, located adjacent to Pan Tianshou Square, was renamed Pan Tianshou Middle School.

The residence houses exhibition rooms, with the exhibits divided into three sections: the first section displays over 40 ink-print reproductions of Pan Tianshou’s works, as well as photos of his life and items he used. The second section features calligraphy and paintings by Pan Tianshou’s descendants and relatives. The third section displays artworks by Pan Tianshou and other renowned calligraphers and painters from Ninghai.

The former residence of Pan Tianshou has become a sacred place where people admire the character and artistry of Mr. Pan, and it has also become one of Ninghai’s major attractions.
