Ninghai Ancient Theaters are designated as National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.

Ninghai Ancient Theaters are located in Ninghai County, Zhejiang Province.

There are about 120 ancient theaters still in existence in Ninghai County, most of which have theater domes. Among the most exquisite are the three-tiered domes and theaters at Chongxing Temple and Aohu Hu Clan Ancestral Hall, as well as the two-tiered domes and theaters represented by Xiapu Wei Clan Ancestral Hall and Panjiayao Pan Clan Ancestral Hall. There are even more theaters with single domes, many of which are also outstanding works of craftsmanship. Domes, traditionally used in significant architecture, are also commonly found in theaters. Functionally, they amplify and direct sound, enhancing the artistry of performances. Crafted with the finest techniques, these domes integrate top-tier aesthetic design, carving, and painting to emphasize their grandeur and elegance.

Three-tiered domes are typically integrated into the most magnificent ancient theater buildings, forming an inseparable and vital part of them. Two-tiered domes are also found in relatively ornate theater structures. To date, no other regions in the province have three-tiered dome theaters; only three such theaters exist in Ninghai (one other being at the Sun Clan Ancestral Hall in Zhangshu Village, Xidian Town). There are ten two-tiered dome theaters remaining in Ninghai, among which those at Xiapu Wei Clan Ancestral Hall and Panjiayao Pan Clan Ancestral Hall are the most representative. Single-dome theaters number in the dozens across the county, with the most exquisite being the one at the Chenghuang Temple (site of the Wang Xitong Uprising) in the county seat.

Ninghai Ancient Theaters authentically preserve their historical appearance, collectively conveying the essence of ancient art and comprehensively showcasing refined cultural values—they are rare artistic masterpieces. In 2006, Ninghai Ancient Theaters, dating from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China period, were inscribed on the sixth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units by the State Council.
