Ninghai County

Ninghai is situated in the middle section of China's mainland coastline, on the eastern coast of Zhejiang Province, between Xiangshan Harbor and Sanmen Bay, where the Tiantai and Siming mountain ranges meet. It is a county under the jurisdiction of Ningbo, a sub-provincial city, and one of the first coastal areas approved by the State Council for opening up. The county governs 4 subdistrict offices and 14 towns, with a population of 580,000, covering a total area of 1,931 square kilometers, a coastline of 176 kilometers, tidal flats of 26,000 hectares, forested mountains spanning 120,000 hectares, and cultivated land of 35,000 hectares. Ninghai boasts a long history and abundant cultural and natural attractions. As early as the Neolithic Age, ancestors lived and worked here. Ninghai County was established in the first year of the Taikang era during the Western Jin Dynasty (280 AD), and has a history of over 1,700 years. The region features beautiful landscapes, a mild climate, and rich tourism resources. In the northern part of the county, the Nanshi Hot Springs are tucked away in the serene depths of the mountains and are recognized as one of China’s three most famous hot springs. Yancang Mountain, majestic in presence, is listed as one of Ningbo’s New Top Ten Scenic Spots. In the southern part, the Liantou Mountain Cold Spring is known for its therapeutic effects on arthritis and other ailments. Since the Qing Dynasty, it has been revered by locals as “miraculous water” for healing, maintaining enduring popularity. Ninghai has been home to many remarkable individuals. In ancient times, there was Fang Xiaoru, who defied the tragedy of the extermination of ten familial relations, and Wang Xitong, a peasant leader who led uprisings. In modern times, figures include Rou Shi, one of the Five Martyrs of the League of Left-Wing Writers, Pan Tianshou, a master of traditional Chinese painting, and the renowned artist Ying Yeping, among others. Since the reform and opening-up, Ninghai County has achieved remarkable economic growth, significantly enhancing its overall strength and living standards, leading the province in development. The county is rich in agricultural resources. Its mountains yield abundant bamboo, timber, tea, mulberry, and fruit, while its seas teem with fish, shrimp, crabs, shellfish, and seaweed. It is recognized as a national commodity grain base and the "Hometown of Egg Ducks in China," also reputed as the "Land of Fish and Rice in Eastern Zhejiang." The county’s marine aquaculture covers an area of 165,000 mu, making it the largest in Zhejiang Province. Teas such as "Wanghai Tea" and "Wangfu Silver Tip" are acclaimed as high-quality national varieties, while seafood products like prawns, mud snails, and razor clams are famous both at home and abroad. Industry is the mainstay of Ninghai’s economy, supported by key sectors including textiles and garments, machinery and electronics, food and beverages, rubber products, and metal products. The Ninghai Economic Development Zone is a provincial-level development zone and a national model zone for township enterprises. Ninghai Hualian Textile Co., Ltd. ranks among the top in economic performance within its industry province-wide. Ningbo Yixiu Group Co., Ltd. is the largest children’s clothing manufacturer in China in terms of production and sales. A wide range of well-known products, such as the Xilin brand manual hydraulic pallet trucks, Daliangshan brand beer, and Aiqi brand pressure cookers, enjoy high reputations in both domestic and international markets. Ninghai benefits from a superior geographical location, convenient transportation, and advanced communications infrastructure. The Shenhai Expressway (Shenyang–Haikou Expressway) and the planned coastal railway run through the county. Provincial Highway 34 (Yongning Line) is a first-class road, forming the main framework of land transportation together with Shengning Line and Xiangxi Line. The county seat is 64 kilometers from Ningbo Airport and 80 kilometers from Beilun Port. The 5,000-ton Qiangjiao Wharf is now in operation, connecting northwards to Ningbo, Shanghai, and Dalian, and southwards to Wenzhou, Xiamen, and Hong Kong, greatly improving water and land passenger and cargo transport capacity. The county’s program-controlled telephone system has a capacity of 109,000 lines, with mobile phones, wireless phones, and pagers all connected to the national network. The area enjoys abundant electricity, plentiful water resources, a highly skilled workforce, and quality services. An open and progressive Ninghai is advancing steadily toward becoming a modern medium-sized city, in line with the planning goals for Ningbo’s sub-central urban area.
