Zesi Residence (Chancellor’s Mansion)

Zesi Residence was built in the early Qing Dynasty and restored in 2002. As its original owner held the rank of first-class official, it is also known as the “Chancellor’s Mansion.”

Approaching Zesi Residence, one can observe its four-sloped eaves and towering horse-head walls, giving the entire structure an imposing aura. The courtyard features spacious halls and upright pillars. Intricate carvings are a hallmark of this residence. The whole house is said to have “no beam uncarved, no carving unrefined,” and is hailed as the “No. 1 Carved Building in the South of the Yangtze.” Upon entering, you can see the story of “Four Immortals Greeting Guests” carved on the central beam, reflecting the host’s hospitality. On the eastern side of the main hall, five cranes are carved on a beam, indicating that the original owner was a civil official rather than a military one, and also symbolizing his aspiration for “Five Sacred Mountains Facing Heaven.” The “Hundred Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix” design on the western beam shows that this was no ordinary official family, as such patterns were not freely carved by common households.
