Tomb Path of Chiang Kai-shek’s Mother

The Tomb Path of Chiang Kai-shek’s Mother is a cultural tourism attraction.

Located at Lin’ao on Cuiping Mountain, 1 kilometer west of Xikou Town. At the entrance of the tomb path stands a stone memorial archway with three gates. The central gate bears the inscription “Tomb Path of Chiang Kai-shek’s Mother.” The pillars of the archway feature relief carvings of flowers, deities of harmony, and the god of longevity, with ancient pine trees towering on both sides. The path is paved with cobblestones and stretches 668 meters, boasting an excellent location. It passes successively by the Dismounting (for horses and sedan chairs) Pavilion, the Octagonal Pavilion, and the Tomb Cottage. The Dismounting Pavilion is square-shaped; beyond it, the mountain path becomes steeper, making it impassable for sedan chairs or horses, requiring visitors to ascend on foot. The Tomb Cottage is inscribed with “Ci’an” (Compassionate Hut) on its lintel. The central hall of the main room displays a portrait of Wang Caiyu, Chiang Kai-shek’s mother. Inside, there are four stone steles, with the central one engraved with Sun Yat-sen’s handwritten “Eulogy for Madam Chiang,” the reverse side recording a biography of Chiang’s mother, and the walls inlaid with Chiang Kai-shek’s “Elegy for Mother” and the “Message of Condolence to Generalissimo Chiang” from the Central Executive Committee of the Kuomintang. Exiting the “Ci’an,” climbing several hundred steps leads to Chiang’s mother’s tomb. The tombstone was inscribed by Sun Yat-sen, with the upper fan-shaped barrier engraved with “A Model of Virtue.” Two stone lions face each other on either side, and the “Name-Deviating Pillars” on the left and right bear a couplet composed by Chiang Kai-shek himself. The upper line reads, “Disaster befell this virtuous and kind mother; my stubbornness in those days leaves me with only late remorse,” and the lower line, “Ashamed to be an unfilial son, I endure boundless sorrow for life.” In front of the tomb lies an offering terrace, with a stone slab inlaid at the center of the worship platform, featuring a relief carving of “phoenixes and green bamboo.”

Wang Caiyu was the mother of Chiang Kai-shek, hailing from Gexu Village, Fenghua, Zhejiang. Born in the second year of the Tongzhi reign during the Qing Dynasty (1863), she was intelligent and clever from a young age, having received a good education from her father. She excelled in needlework and was deeply beloved. However, her youth was marked by misfortune, and she once retreated into monastic life. Yet, facing adversity, she strove tenaciously, honoring her elders and raising her children, managing the household with skill—truly a role model for countless women in feudal society.

Wang’s ancestors migrated from Lianshan, Fenghua, to Gexu Village during the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty. Wang Caiyu’s grandfather, Wang Yuying, had three sons and two daughters: the eldest son Wang Youze, the second son Wang Youmo, and the third son Wang Youjin. Wang Youze, courtesy name Pinzhai...
