Xikou Wenchang Pavilion
The Xikou Wenchang Pavilion is a cultural tourism attraction.
The Wenchang Pavilion was first built in the ninth year of the Yongzheng reign during the Qing Dynasty. As the pavilion enshrined the god of literature, Kui Xing, it was also known as "Kui Pavilion" and famed as the "Soaring Kui Pavilion." It was one of the Ten Scenic Spots of Xikou during the Qing era. In early April 1924, Chiang Kai-shek returned to his hometown for tomb-sweeping and found the structure in disrepair. He funded the demolition and reconstruction, commissioning his elder brother Chiang Chieh-ching to organize the labor. The rebuilt pavilion was completed the following year as a two-story building with upturned eaves, covering an area of 500 square meters.
Chiang Kai-shek named it "Le Ting" (Pleasure Pavilion) and wrote "The Record of Le Ting at Wuling" to depict its beauty. After marrying Soong Mei-ling in December 1927, Chiang often stayed here during visits to Xikou, turning it into their private villa. The first floor of the Wenchang Pavilion served as a guest reception room, while the second floor housed the bedrooms and living quarters of Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling.
On January 13, 1937, after the Xi'an Incident, General Zhang Xueliang was taken to Xikou under house arrest, with the Wenchang Pavilion as his initial place of confinement. He stayed there for ten days before being transferred to Xuedou Mountain. On December 12, 1939, six Japanese warplanes bombed Xikou, reducing the Wenchang Pavilion to rubble. It remained a ruin until Chiang Kai-shek left the mainland. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, many artworks depicted the Wenchang Pavilion as part of the Chiang family’s hometown legacy, among which the most renowned is "Chiang Family Hometown – Wenchang Pavilion" by Master Thumb, a member of the Chinese Museums Association, National First-Class Artist, nationally acclaimed as “the foremost painter of Chinese celebrity residences,” and a celebrated painter.
