Former Site of Wuling School

The former site of Wuling School is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhejiang Province.

Wuling School, also known as Wuling Middle School, is located at the western foot of Mount Wu in Xikou Town, a national-level scenic area in Fenghua City, Zhejiang Province. The entire school complex features a rigorous layout and rational design, with key structures including the main auditorium, teaching buildings, dormitories, and a hospital. These buildings are all of brick-concrete construction, follow a clear central axis, and exhibit architectural characteristics blending Chinese and Western styles from the Republican era, with their roofs featuring single-eave xieshan-style design, inconspicuous rafter lifts, relatively flat tiled slopes, wooden beams, column-free walls, and large-span raised beams supported by brick walls or reinforced concrete columns. Each building has an entrance hall, either square, semi-circular, predominantly Western, or predominantly Chinese in style. The elevated bases give the structures a particularly majestic appearance.

According to the *History of Wuling School*, the campus was built in 1929, designed by Weng Wentao (brother of Weng Wenhao) and constructed by Shanghai’s Sun Yusheng Construction Company, and completed in 1930. At the time, it covered over 4 hectares with a total floor area of more than 15,000 square meters. The campus was densely planted with flowers and trees, with gardens between each building, making the structures appear nestled among greenery—it is a rare and outstanding ensemble of Republican-era architecture in Fenghua City. In 2003, it was designated as a cultural relic protection site of Fenghua City. In 2004, the city’s cultural relics protection office recommended it for inclusion in the sixth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
