Former Residence and Tomb of Wang Renshu

The former residence and tomb of Wang Renshu are Provincial-Level Cultural Relics Protection Units of Zhejiang Province.

The former residence and tomb of Wang Renshu (pen name: Ba Ren) are located in Dayan Village, Dayan Town, Fenghua City. In March 2005, they were designated as part of the fifth batch of Provincial-Level Cultural Relics Protection Units by the People's Government of Zhejiang Province.

Wang Renshu (1901–1972), pen name Ba Ren, was a renowned modern Chinese writer and literary theorist from Dayan, Fenghua. In 1925, while studying at Fenghua Middle School, he joined the Chinese Communist Party. The following year, he went to Guangzhou to work at the rear office of the National Revolutionary Army General Headquarters. After the April 12 Incident, he was arrested. Upon his release, he pursued writing in Shanghai and was one of the founding members of the League of Left-Wing Writers. In 1941, the Party assigned him to Singapore and Indonesia, where he engaged in anti-Japanese salvation efforts and patriotic activities among overseas Chinese. After the outbreak of the Pacific War, he went into hiding in Sumatra, conducting underground resistance activities. After liberation, he served as China’s first ambassador to Indonesia. From 1954 onward, he was the deputy director of the People’s Publishing House. In 1961, he was transferred to the Nanjing Compilation Bureau, and in July 1972, he passed away in his hometown filled with regret.

Ba Ren’s tomb is situated at the foot of Wawu Mountain, north of Dayan Village, facing a mountain pond, and oriented north-south. The tombstone bears large characters inscribed by Hu Yuzhi that read “Tomb of Comrade Wang Renshu (Ba Ren)”, and there is an offering platform in front.

Ba Ren’s former residence was originally the right wing room of the compound of the former residence of Wang Feng. It faces south and is a two-story building with a total width of three bays. The right middle bay on the upper floor served as the bedroom, where the original tables, chairs, wooden bed, and the furniture used during Ba Ren’s wedding are still preserved.
