Former Site of Fenghua County School
The former site of Fenghua County School is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhejiang Province.
The former site of Fenghua County School is located within the campus of Jinping Central Primary School at No. 227 Dongmen Road, Jinping Subdistrict, Fenghua District. Situated in the core area of the ancient city, it is commonly known as the Confucius Temple. Originally built during the Tang Dynasty, the existing structures date back to the Qing Dynasty. Since the Republican era, most of the original county school buildings have been demolished, leaving only the Dacheng Hall, Kuai'ao Bridge (also called Pan Bridge), and the Pan Pond.
The Dacheng Hall was rebuilt in the eighth year of the Xianfeng reign (1858) during the Qing Dynasty and completed in the ninth year. It faces south and is a single-story, double-eaved hip-and-gable roof structure with a lifted-beam framework, covering an area of approximately 356 square meters. The hall is supported by 36 pillars, with a slightly square floor plan about three bays wide (approximately 14.5 meters) and six bays deep with fourteen purlins (approximately 16.3 meters). Twenty perimeter pillars form a continuous corridor. The main ridge features rolled tile decorations and mythical animal ornaments at both ends, while the roof tiles have been replaced with green tiles.
Kuai'ao Bridge, also known as Pan Bridge, is a single-arch stone bridge from the Qing Dynasty, stretching north to south across the Pan Pond. The original bridge was about 16.9 meters long, with a clear span of 3.8 meters and a current rise of 1.4 meters. The arches are constructed with jointed, segmented masonry. On both the east and west sides of the arches are two mythical dragon heads (ao tou). The bridge body and piers are built with locally distinctive Meiyuan stone in staggered courses. Two dragon heads are positioned beside each of the east and west arches. The original bridge deck, railings, and balustrades have been replaced with new bluestone components.
In January 2017, it was designated as part of the seventh batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units by the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province.
