Baishuichong Waterfall

Baishuichong is located on Baishui Mountain, four kilometers south of Liangnong Town. Also known as Baishan, the mountain derives its name from a hermit named Bai Gong who attained enlightenment here. The mountain features four peaks—Yeshan, Pingfeng, Shiwu, and Yungen. Shiwu Peak is rugged with jagged rocks and steep cliffs, while Yungen Peak is lush and striking, adorned with glistening springs. Between these two peaks, a waterfall cascades down from a height of 53 meters, resembling a white dragon soaring through the sky, with a thunderous roar that shakes the earth—a truly spectacular sight. This is the famous Baishui Flying Waterfall, commonly known as Baishuichong. Throughout history, many poets have written vivid and evocative verses about this waterfall. For example, Zhao Danshan of the Yuan Dynasty described it as: “The jade dragon roars, splitting the mountain open; cascading waves surge forth over the rugged cliffs. The swirling winds bring forth flying rain, as echoes of thunder rumble through the valleys.” Ming Dynasty’s Shen Mingchen also left behind the line: “Gurgling, it blows ancient snow, swirling back into the Milky Way.”

The source of the waterfall is at Daoshi Mountain, which also got its name from the legend of a Taoist priest attaining immortality here. Along the stream banks and rocky shoals of Daoshi Mountain, clusters of tea plants grow. Legend has it that in ancient times, a man named Yu Hong from Yuyao entered the mountains to gather tea leaves and encountered the immortal Danqiu Zi, who gifted him a special tea plant from the mountains. Later, it was named “Waterfall Immortal Tea,” meaning a gift from the immortals. This is the origin of the tea, and nearby lies the ruins of a tea shrine built by Yu Hong in honor of Danqiu Zi.

Twenty-four streams near Daoshi Mountain converge at the top of Baishui Mountain and plunge down to Longqiu. At the waterfall’s outlet, there is a cave called Chanyuan Cave, also known as Baishui Palace, believed to be where Bai Gong used to recite scriptures. During the Yuan Dynasty, Taoist priest Mao Yongzhen presided over the Ciwei Temple. He reclaimed land under the waterfall, expanded the Shitian Mountain House, and built the Qinghui Pavilion next to the temple as a viewing spot for the waterfall.

The waterfall of Baishuichong cascades into a pool, then flows out from the pool’s mouth, rushing between massive rocks to form a stream. Legend says that Liu Gang and his wife Fan Yunqiao, who followed Bai Gong to cultivate immortality, picked herbs and refined elixirs to help all sentient beings. They washed the herbs in the stream every day, dyeing the water purple—hence the name Zixi, or Purple Stream, also called Herb-Washing Stream. Because this area is perennially shrouded in mist, forming a miles-long cloud belt, travelers moving north or south feel as if they are floating on a sea of clouds. Hence, it is called “Guoyun” (Passing Clouds). Nearby, there are also Guoyun Rock and Guoyun Bridge.
