Shenggui Grottoes
The Shenggui Grottoes are a cultural tourism attraction.
The Shenggui Grottoes are located to the north of the urban area. Legend has it that during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the great general Liu Laozhi returned victorious over Sun Yong and stationed his troops on the mountain, hence the name Shenggui Mountain (“Mountain of Victorious Return”). During the Ming Dynasty, Hu Zongxian returned triumphant from multiple campaigns against Japanese pirates and also stationed troops here. Later generations commemorated him by carving his statue on the southern slope of the mountain, which came to be known as “Hu Gongyan” (Lord Hu’s Cliff). Throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties and the Republican era, continuous carving of Buddhist statues took place, showcasing exquisite artistry.
